Ahern and IMC to discuss IRA-linked Belfast bank heist

31/01/2005 - 07:27:38
The Provisional IRA's alleged involvement in last month's Belfast bank heist is expected to dominate a meeting today between the Taoiseach and the Independent Monitoring Commission (IMC).

The IMC was established to monitor levels of paramilitary activity and recommend sanctions against groups deemed to have breached their ceasefires.

The PSNI, backed by the Irish and British governments, has publicly blamed the IRA for last month's £26.5m (€38m) robbery and the IMC is widely expected to support this assessment.

If it reports IRA involvement in the raid, this would pave the way for the British government to remove Westminster privileges from Sinn Féin as punishment for the IRA’s activities.
