Rock: I'm too old for MTV awards

31/01/2005 - 15:08:05
Funnyman Chris Rock signed up to host the Oscars after he realised he was too old for all the MTV award shows he used to host.

The comic, dubbed the funniest man in America last year, was the surprise choice to host the 2005 Academy Awardsbut he knew it was time to move on after hosting award shows for teenagers.

He says: "(The Oscars) seemed like an older guy's gig, with a tuxedo and all, and I really liked doing the MTV awards.

"This year, MTV did their awards in Miami, and something just seemed really young about it. Normally, there's, like, one person I don't know. But there might have been four people that I had no clue about… At that moment I had a tux made."

Confident Rock feels sure he'll bring a fresh look to the Oscars next month because he has never seen the ceremony on TV.

He adds: "I never watched the Oscars... Come on, it's a fashion show. No one performs; it's not like a music show. What straight black man sits there and watches the Oscars?"
