Reid set for Spurs: Redknapp

29/01/2005 - 15:38:39
Harry Redknapp today claimed Tottenham were likely to sign Nottingham Forest’s Andy Reid – even though Southampton have agreed terms for the midfielder.

Forest announced on their website that they had accepted a cash-plus-players offer from Saints for Reid.

However, Redknapp believes he has been beaten to the signing.

He said: “The chairman [Rupert Lowe] has agreed terms with Nottingham Forest, but I don’t think the lad will be coming here. I think Tottenham will be interested, and he will end up there.”

Speaking after Southampton had sneaked past Portsmouth into the FA Cup fifth round in a lunchtime kick-off at St Mary’s, the Saints boss described himself as “one million percent” certain Reid would not be heading for the south coast.

Forest chairman Nigel Doughty had earlier told www.nottinghamforest.premiumtv.co.uk: “I promised Andy that should we receive an offer that was right for Nottingham Forest we would allow him the opportunity to fulfil his ambition of playing in the Premiership.

“The offer made by Southampton fulfils that criteria, at the same time as providing Gary Megson with two players that he feels would strengthen his squad at the City Ground.

“We have had a number of derisory offers from one other Premiership club - none of which was acceptable.

“One of my duties as chairman of Nottingham Forest is to ensure that no club takes advantage of our position in the Championship. While I’m chairman, no player will leave this club on the cheap.

“Financially, the club continues to progress with the repayment of its debt and move towards our goal of self-sufficiency in the medium term.”
