Newcastle strikers Alan Shearer and Shola Ameobi made light of the absence of Craig Bellamy to help fire their side into the fifth round of the FA Cup.

Shearer blasted home his 12th goal of the season eight minutes before half-time and Ameobi added a second five minutes later to pave the way for victory.

Substitute Dele Adebola pulled one back for the visitors in first-half injury-time, but Celestine Babayaro’s first goal for the Magpies seven minutes after the break made the game safe.

The home side were almost toying with their opponents as they attacked in wave after wave, although City were now opting for damage limitation and getting as many men behind the ball as possible.

There was a glimmer of hope for the visitors 12 minutes from time when Giddings crossed from the left for John, but his header sailed high over the bar.

Adams withdrew McSheffrey and John for Claus Bech Jorgensen and Eddie Johnson with 11 minutes remaining, but the result by then was a formality.

Faye received warm applause when he was replaced by Aaron Hughes with eight minutes remaining and it was in similar vein that the final whistle was greeted.
