Workers were tied up by post office raiders
The estimated €250,000 snatched in a post office robbery in Dublin this morning is a “very substantial loss”, An Post said today.
The money was taken from Rathmines Post Office after raiders surprised staff when a cash delivery was made this morning.
It is believed that at least two raiders broke into the premises during the night and tied up staff when they arrived in for work.
The masked youths then lay in wait until the money for the day was delivered by a security firm’s cash transit van.
Gardaí said no shots were fired and no-one was injured during the raid. It’s not known how the raiders made their getaway.
An Post today confirmed that a sum in the region of 250,000 euro was taken in the raid.
Head of public relations John Foley said: “The figure being mentioned seems accurate.
“It’s a very substantial loss for us.
“Rathmines is one of the biggest offices in Dublin and covers a large population area.”
An Post is conducting its own inquiry in tandem with the garda investigation.
An Post officials are at the scene and company procedures in such circumstances are being followed, said Mr Foley.
Up to €40,000 was taken from Ballyneety Post Office in Limerick in November.
