Chamber supports Jurys Hotel decision

17/01/2005 - 17:22:03
Cork Chamber of Commerce has backed the plan by Jurys Doyle Hotel Group to build a new property on the Western Road in the city.

Robin O’Sullivan, president of the business organisation, said the provision of a new hotel is a vital necessity as there continues to be a shortfall in the city, in terms of overnight accommodation.

“At a time when Cork, through the efforts of the city and county councils, the Irish Hotels Federation and the chamber, among others, is making a determined effort to re-establish Cork city as a tourism focal point, the plans for the provision of a first-class city centre hotel are of enormous importance,” he said.

He went on to say that Cork needs to build on the quality reputation which Jurys have earned over the years on this site, in order to be able to take full advantage of the opportunities existing.

Mr O’Sullivan called for tourism infrastructure to be put in place in Cork, including a major convention centre.

“The chamber wishes to place on record its appreciation of the contribution of all the members of the management and the staff of the hotel, and indeed the Jurys Hotel Doyle Hotel Group and we wish them well following the closure necessary to allow for the construction of a new hotel on the Western Road.”
