Majority of doctors believe Hanly Report will be shelved

An overwhelming majority of Irish consultants and doctors reportedly believe that the Hanly Report on hospital reform will never be implemented.

Reports in the medical press today said a survey had found that 88% of consultants and 84% of GPs believed the report would be shelved.

The controversial document recommended the downgrading of many local hospitals and the concentration of services in regional centres.

Today’s reports also said the Government had failed to renew its contract with David Hanly, who drew up the document, and that this would affect implementation of his report.
