Archbishops call for day of solidarity with tsunami victims
07/01/2005 - 07:47:19Ireland's Catholic archbishops have called on people to observe a day of solidarity today for the victims of the south Asian tsunami disaster.
Speaking on their behalf, the Archbishop of Armagh Sean Brady said the demonstration of solidarity should include reflection, fasting and generosity.
"First, I ask people to stop and be silent and to pray for both victims and survivors," he said.
"Secondly, I'm urging people to live more simply so that others may simply live. By fasting, by knowing at least for a short time what it's like to be hungry, we can identify more closely with those starving children, the sick and the elderly in their need.
"Finally, we are urging people to dig deep in their pockets and give generously."
