Wenger chasing Sol's signature

31/12/2004 - 17:38:03
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger believes that obtaining Sol Campbell’s signature on a new contract could be his most significant move during the January transfer window.

Just like Edu, Jermaine Pennant and Lauren, England defender Campbell, whose current deal runs out this summer, could theoretically start negotiations with an overseas club over a pre-contract agreement tomorrow.

However, while Edu looks bound for Spain, Wenger does not believe that he will lose Campbell, who joined Arsenal on a free transfer four years ago, in a similar way.

The 30-year-old centre-back has been close to reaching a final agreement with Arsenal on a new contract for some time, with both he and Wenger having stressed that only the fine details still have to be worked out.

Asked if agreement had yet been reached, Wenger insisted: “Not yet, but soon. That maybe will be the signing in January.”

The Arsenal boss, who may have to replace Edu if the Brazilian signs a deal with Valencia, nevertheless again refused to rule out a “surprise” purchase during the transfer window.

Wenger, who snapped up Jose Antonio Reyes 12 months ago after similarly ruling himself out an imminent deal, concluded: “We are never in the market in January, but sometimes you have surprises.”
