Govt urged to do more for tsunami victims

31/12/2004 - 12:24:42
The aid agency GOAL has called on the Irish Government to do more to help the victims of Sunday's devastating tsunamis in the Indian Ocean.

Around 130,000 people have now been confirmed dead in the more than 10 countries affected by the huge tidal waves, which were triggered by a 9 magnitude earthquake off the coast of Indonesia.

The Government has already pledged €2m to the aid effort in the region, while the public have donated around €1.8m so far.

Despite this, GOAL chief executive John O’Shea said the Government should re-examine its attitude to the disaster.

"I don't think the Irish Government has fully comprehended the enormity of the tragedy, nor indeed the attitude and mood of the Irish people," he said.

"The Irish people have shown and extraordinary amount of generosity towards this situation, they want to do as much as possible for the survivors and I think they want to see our Government take the lead."
