Gas contract row threatens Ukrainian gas supply
31/12/2004 - 07:25:40Turkmenistan says it will cut off all gas supplies to Ukraine from midnight today over the lack of a contract for 2005, in a move that could deal a sharp blow to the Ukrainian economy.
The foreign ministry said gas supplies would also be cut off to Russia, but only until January 7, due to pipeline repairs.
“Ukraine, however, has been reluctant to hold (talks) over the past few days. Instead, media outlets have circulated unreliable reports saying that such negotiations are in progress,” the ministry said.
No one from Naftohaz or Ukraine’s Fuel and Energy Ministry was available to comment last night.
