Blair asked to call emergency G-8 meeting

30/12/2004 - 15:32:46
Tony Blair was being asked today to call an emergency meeting of the G-8 industrial nations to discuss their response to Asia’s tsunami disaster.

Britain takes over the group’s presidency on New Year’s Day.

Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi made the call in Rome today. He said: “The meeting should discuss the organisation of aid and the possible reduction of debt.”

He said the disaster was “the worst cataclysm of the modern era. All the world is sending aid and Europe must be a protagonist, it must make its existence felt by responding together and globally. “Europe must assume a collective global undertaking to help those economies.”

The billionaire premier said he intended to talk to the other G-8 countries about his meeting proposal and would phone Prime Minister Tony Blair, who is on an Egyptian holiday, today.
