Work-related accidents caused 50 deaths in 2004
30/12/2004 - 15:30:28The latest figures show that 50 people have lost their lives this year in work-related deaths.
The number is down from 65 in 2003, but the building industry and farming are still the most dangerous sectors to work in.
Most of those killed lost control of machinery or a vehicle, or else fell from a height.
Galway and Waterford account for a fifth of all work-related deaths in 2004.
Chief executive of the Health and Safety Authority, Tom Beegan, said today that it was time for business and industry to treat safety seriously.
"This is a cost that can be controlled completely within the enterprise by people taking some due care and paying attention to what they are actually doing and how they carry out their work," he said.
