Romario to retire

29/12/2004 - 08:38:19
Legendary Brazilian striker Romario has announced he is to bring an end to his illustrious career, according to the newspaper O Globo.

The former Barcelona forward, who will be 39 years old in January, is the second-highest goalscorer in the history of the Brazil national team, 25 strikes behind Pele, who collected 90 goals.

“I have stopped,” he said. “I can’t go on any more. I don’t have the will any more.”

Romario’s last stint as a player was at Fluminense in Rio de Janeiro, but he will be best-remembered for his outstanding forward play which inspired Brazil to win the 1994 World Cup.

In the same year he was named the FIFA World Player of the Year.
