NCBI calls for employee eye tests for heavy computer users

Employers are obliged to provide eye tests for staff that use computers for more than an hour a day.

However, the National Council for the Blind claimed today that there is no evidence that the law is being upheld.

The Health and Safety Authority is being urged to make the matter a priority for its inspectors.

Des Kenny of the NCBI said that employees should request their right to have their eyes tested, because studies in Japan have indicated that with certain kinds of eye conditions, heavy computer use can exacerbate those conditions and lead in later life to glaucoma, a form of total sight loss.
