French foreign minister heads for disaster zones
27/12/2004 - 16:01:21French Foreign Minister Michel Barnier was flying to Sri Lanka and Thailand tonight on a plane carrying humanitarian aid to tidal wave victims.
Three French nationals were confirmed dead – one in Sri Lanka, another in Thailand and the third in India. Six French were also reported missing, his ministry said.
An estimated 5,000 French were believed to be living or on holiday in the South and Southeast Asian areas hit by the waves.
Barnier’s sudden decision made him one of the highest ranking European officials headed to the disaster region, his office said.
