PSNI search for gun stolen during Christmas Eve raids

27/12/2004 - 12:10:48
Police in the North are searching for a gun that was stolen from a vehicle during Christmas Eve raids in west Belfast.

The gun was taken as officers searched homes in the city for evidence that might lead them to those responsible for taking £22m (€31.3m) from the Northern Bank on December 20.

Police raided a number of homes in west and north Belfast on Christmas Eve.

The raids caused fury in republican areas and people spilled out of their homes to attack the police.

In one raid in Ballymurphy six officers were hurt with one still unconscious when he reached hospital.

In another raid in the city, this one at the home of a senior republican in the Cavendish Street area of the mid-Falls Road area, there were similar scenes.

Amid the confusion, a police weapon and ammunition was taken from the back of a vehicle and taken from the scene.

It is believed that leading republican Eddie Copeland is to take an official complaint against the police after his home in Ardoyne was searched and 30 Christmas presents either searched or taken away.
