Minister encourages party-goers to leave cars at home

The Minister of State for Transport, Ivor Callely, has called on citizens to act responsibly in celebrating the New Year.

He has encouraged party-goers to use public transport, taxis or a designated driver instead of driving their own vehicles after consuming alcohol.

He said that everyone should be “conscious of their personal safety and the safety of other road-users at this time of year”.

The Minister continued: “There has been a significant increase in road deaths in 2004 compared with 2003, which is a serious cause for concern.

“Speed, driver behaviour, and driving while intoxicated are the most prevalent features in serious accidents,” he concluded.
