Webber plans fast track to victory

24/12/2004 - 10:11:59
Mark Webber expects to be battling for victories sooner rather than later now he has joined Williams.

The Australian will make his Williams debut on home ground in Melbourne in March and is confident he will not take long to be fighting for top spot.

His best result came at Albert Park three years ago on his Formula One debut, when he claimed fifth place for Minardi, but he expects an immediate improvement now he has joined one of the sport’s heavyweights.

Webber said: “Of course it’s something which I want to try and build on, the history that they’ve had here and the car, I hope, will be very good next year and gives us a good chance to challenge for victories very, very quickly.

“Straight away I want to be up the front – and that’s what it’s all about, that’s what we’re striving towards, is to win grands prix, and if we win enough you never know what happens.

“Championships are even harder to get, I assume, but the wins are something which we have to look at immediately.”

Webber still does not know who his team-mate will be for next season, after Williams were thwarted in their attempts to lure Jenson Button from BAR.

That move fell foul of Formula One’s contract recognition board and the team will spend Christmas deciding between Nick Heidfeld and Antonio Pizzonia.
