McDowell plans second Special Criminal Court

22/12/2004 - 13:11:20
Justice Minister Michael McDowell has announced plans to establish a second Special Criminal Court in an effort to speed up the processing of cases.

The controversial non-jury court was set up in the 1970s. Minister McDowell said today the new court would come into effect on January 1.

He said seven judges would be appointed to the court at a later date.

The minister said the measure would help clear the list of impending trials at the Special Criminal Court by the middle of next year.
