Labour Youth back Irish emigrants

22/12/2004 - 08:47:44
The youth wing of the Labour Party is due to begin a 24-hour vigil in Dublin this evening to highlight the plight of Irish emigrants in Britain.

Labour Youth has accused the Government of treating these people with contempt given the contribution they made to the Irish economy while the country was struggling to support itself.

The organisation said the Government had failed to provide funding in line with that of its own taskforce to help Irish emigrants who have fallen on hard times.

Speaking ahead of today's vigil, Labour's Donal O'Liathain said: "Many of these Irish emigrants are very elderly at this stage and have worked very long and hard.

"They've done tough jobs for their entire lives and they did it a lot of the time so they could send money back to Ireland.

"We just want to see that the Government here in Ireland repays that debt of gratitude that we owe them and increases the amount of money given to groups supporting the Irish abroad."
