12,000 jobs created by indigenous firms

Indigenous Irish companies created a total of 12,000 new jobs last year, according to the Government agency responsible for developing Irish industry.

In its end-of-year review, Enterprise Ireland also said that Irish firms generated new export sales worth €1bn in 2004.

The agency's chief executive, Frank Ryan, said: "A good thing about 2004 was that we saw a growth in biotechnology, in ICT, in photonics, in medical devices - across a whole range of new growth areas that are attracting in new high-potential start-up companies and also giving excellent markets for existing Irish companies."
