LRC talks aim to avert An Post strike

19/11/2004 - 09:04:49
Talks get underway today at the Labour Relations Commission aimed at averting Christmas postal chaos.

An Post and the Communications Workers Union have so far failed to agree on the key issues of overtime, payment and staffing levels during talks.

Both sides are attending a meeting with the Labour Relations Commission this morning at the GPO at 10am in an attempt to broker a deal.

John Foley of An Post said: “We’re hopeful now that the union will desist from its threats to disrupt the service, and get into realistic discussions at the LRC.”

However, CWU spokesman Sean McDonagh said: “The bottom line is that we want arrangements to be put in place which will ensure that all the mail is delivered before Christmas Eve and we don’t have a debacle like we had in 2002.

Mr McDonagh also said workers did not want to be "overly burdened by the huge volumes of mail, particularly in circumstances where the level of overtime has gone up because of a recruitment embargo".
