Strike cripples Italian air travel

Air travel from Italy was crippled today by an air traffic controllers nationwide strike that forced hundreds of flights to be cancelled or delayed.

The four-hour walkout in protest at plans for a single European traffic control agency started at noon (11am Irish time).

The Italian flagship airline, Alitalia, said it was cancelling 172 flights, including 78 domestic flights and 94 international flights.

Controllers fear plans to create a single traffic control agency in Vienna will cost some of them their jobs.
