Travel pass introduced as additional trains announced

Commuters will soon be able to use a single ticket for buses, trains and trams.

A "smart card" is being developed at a cost of almost €30m.

The universal pass will be swiped over a validator machine on public transport, and can be topped up in a similar way to mobile phone credit.

Meanwhile, Irish Rail is announcing additional trains and increased frequency on some of its routes.

A new timetable for Commuter, Intercity and DART services comes into effect on December 12, with improvements on a number of lines.
