Tompkins tipped for Tipp post

16/11/2004 - 08:36:27
Former Cork football boss Larry Tompkins has been tipped to take over the vacant Tipperary manager's job.

The two-time All-Ireland winner is favourite to replace Andy Shorthall, who resigned in protest before the Premier County's All-Ireland qualifier against Fermanagh last June.

Shorthall and his selectors were unhappy with a hurling fixture involving a number of the players a few days before the game. The standoff led to the players withdrawing their services. Fermanagh were given a walkover and the Tipperary county board was fined.

Delegates at last week's county board meeting voted not to re-instate Shorthall and a new management set-up is to be put forward to this Thursday’s football board meeting.

Tompkins is the favourite to land the job, while former Tipp star Peter Lambert and ex-manager Seamus McCarthy have also been linked with the post.
