Prize boost for Irish Grand National

16/11/2004 - 14:03:50
Next year’s Powers Gold Label Irish Grand National at Fairyhouse will be Ireland’s richest jumps race after a cash boost has taken it up to €250,000 in value.

The three-mile-five-furlong marathon, which traditionally takes place on Easter Monday, was worth €180,000 when Ferdy Murphy’s Granit D’Estruval obliged last season.

The significant increase from sponsors Irish Distillers and Horse Racing Ireland represents a near 40 per cent rise.

“The Irish Grand National is without doubt the highlight of the year at Fairyhouse and this prize fund injection is bound to increase the profile of the race even further,” said Dick Sheil, general manager at the track, where the race will be run on March 28 next year.

“We greatly appreciate the support of Irish Distillers and Horse Racing Ireland for their continued support of this historic race.”
