Dáil committee discusses cutbacks in rent benefits
16/11/2004 - 11:01:20The effects of cutbacks in the Rent Supplement Scheme will come under the spotlight of the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Social and Family Affairs later today.
The Dáil committee has been hearing a range of pre-Budget submissions from the community and voluntary sector.
The charitable organisation Centre Care will today present details on how the rent cutbacks have impacted on vulnerable groups.
Chairman of the Committee, Labour Deputy Willie Penrose, is calling for a reversal of the cutbacks which were introduced last year.
Deputy Penrose said groups such as returning emigrants, women with crisis pregnancies, and single homeless men are bearing the brunt of the rent supplement restrictions.
