Madonna forgives Geldof for Band Aid comments

16/11/2004 - 18:03:39
Bob Geldof has asked Madonna to introduce the new Band Aid charity single - despite slamming her performance at the original Live Aid show 20 years ago.

The Boomtown Rats star phoned the Material Girl as she travelled to Britain's UK Hall of Fame ceremony last week and she immediately forgave his disparaging comments and agreed to launch the re-recording of 'Do they know it's Christmas?' when it's played on the UK's five main TV channels at 6.05pm on Thursday.

Geldof explains: "Madonna was just a kid when she played at Live Aid 20 years ago. What I needed was someone with resonance who goes beyond the normal pop world and reaches everyone. When people buy this record they are making a political demand. Madonna understands that."

Madonna will tell viewers: "Twenty years ago I performed at Live Aid. You saw me and my generation demanding a change. Once again here we are, 20 years later and more people die of hunger in Africa than war and Aids put together."
