In contrast to yesterday's positive performance the ISEQ index of Irish shares closed down 69.83 points to 6,045.95 today.

In a complete reversal to Monday's upward trend, financial stocks accounted for some of the slide with all of them seeing falls. Bank of Ireland is down 18 cent to €11.55. AIB is down seven cent to €14.38 while Anglo Irish Bank fell nine cent to €16.11. Irish Life and Permanent fell 18 cent to €13.52.

The day's major faller was Elan who saw their pharmaceutical shares tumble 85 cent to €22.95.

Ryanair stock fell by 10 cent to €4.90 today. The airline announced today 70,000 "free" flights for customers in Germany (exclusive of taxes). The giveaway is to celebrate carrying 10 million passengers in the country. The airline operates from eight regional airports throughout Germany.

Continuing the downward trend was building materials group CRH with a 29 cent decrease to €19.51.

However, it wasn't all doom and gloom in Dublin as Irish continental group (up 30c to €11.50), FBD (up 25c to €18.75), IAWS group (up 19c to €11.20) and Paddy Power (up 15c to €11.00) all saw their share prices rise.
