McEniff aiming for 27th heaven

11/11/2004 - 17:17:03
Ulster boss Brian McEniff knows his side must see off a strong Leinster challenge if they are to lift a record 27th Railway Cup football title in Paris on Saturday.

Both provinces have claimed 26 wins apiece, with McEniff's charges the slight favourites, having lifted their eighth interprovincial title in 13 years last November.

"It certainly would be a nice psychological fillip for us," said McEniff of the record.

"But there's no doubt that Luke Dempsey will have his boys fired up. They held on to beat Munster in the semi-final and will obviously feel they can better that performance against us," stated the Donegal hotelier.

Twelve months ago Armagh All-Star nominee Steven McDonnell hit eight of their 13 points in a 0-13 to 0-9 final defeat of Connacht in Enniskillen.

Minus the injured McDonnell, McEniff can still call upon the attacking prowess of Derry duo Paddy Bradley and Enda Muldoon. The pairing bagged nine scores in the province's 0-15 to 1-6 semi-final defeat of Connacht two weeks ago.

Meanwhile, Armagh boss Joe Kernan's son Stephen has picked up Tennents' Ulster GAA writers' award for October.

The 21-year-old University of Ulster student played a starring role in Armagh's run to their first ever U21 All-Ireland title and Crossmaglen Rangers' ninth straight county success.
