Official keeps Hassan relatives informed

21/10/2004 - 11:44:35
The Department of Foreign Affairs has sent an official to Co Kerry to act as liaison officer to relatives of Margaret Hassan, the Irish-born aid worker kidnapped in Iraq this week.

Minister Dermot Ahern announced the move to the Seanad today. Mrs Hassan’s sister lives near Kenmare with her husband and three children.

Mr Ahern also told the Seanad that his officials had held talks overnight with the Egyptian and Jordanian governments and the Arab League in an effort to secure Mrs Hassan’s release.

"Later today, we will continue those efforts," he added. "I will be discussing the case in detail with the Foreign Minister of Palestine, Dr [Nabil] Shaath [and] I know that he will share my strong view that Margaret should be released immediately."
