Christian Aid demands EU action in Israel
The Irish-British charity group Christian Aid has called on the European Union to take meaningful action to halt ongoing abuses of international law by the Israeli government.
In a report due to be published today, the charity said Israel’s actions in the occupied Palestinian territories were destroying any chance of a two-state solution to the Middle East conflict.
Christian Aid said the “security barrier” being constructed in the West Bank and the expansion of Israeli settlements were effectively a “land grab” that was fanning the flames of violence in the region.
Speaking at the launch of the document, independent Senator David Norris, who has travelled to Israel and the occupied territories with Christian Aid, said the EU was doing nothing of any consequence to halt the Israeli actions.
"There's a massive, systematic and deliberate violation of human rights going on by the Sharon regime, something that is protested against by Israeli citizens themselves," he said.
"What is Ireland doing, what is the European Union doing? Absolutely sweet damn all."
