A&E departments set for further chaos

Accident and emergency departments throughout Ireland are preparing for another day of chaos today due to overcrowding and a lack of hospital beds.

More than 200 patients were left on temporary beds in casualty units across the country yesterday due to the shortage of acute hospital beds.

Hospitals in Dublin, Cork and Galway all had to cancel planned surgery yesterday due to the pressure on beds and more patients are also expected to have their operations cancelled today.

Tánaiste Mary Harney has announced her intention to introduce measures to alleviate the crisis, but she has warned that there are no quick-fix solutions.
