Band Aid Christmas is too hot for bookie

21/10/2004 - 16:00:24
Bookmaker William Hill is refusing to take bets on the new Band Aid single making the Christmas number one because it is such a dead cert.

Jamelia, Coldplay, The Darkness and Travis are among the acts being lined up to sing on the charity single.

“The Christmas number one is a very popular bet with our customers. If released, Band Aid is a virtual certainty to take the number one spot,” said William Hill spokesman Rupert Adams.

“Were we to include Band Aid in the betting, it would be a red-hot favourite and would decimate the market.

“If, as expected, Band Aid goes to number one we will for the first time be paying out on the Christmas number two.”

Sir Bob Geldof and Midge Ure are teaming up to re-record the song 20 years after the original topped the chart, with proceeds going to Ethiopia and Sudan.

Jamelia is the latest star to sign up and she told The Sun: “I was absolutely thrilled to be asked to be part of it. It’s important for my generation to realise we can try to change things.

“I was only aged three the first time around so I’m really pleased I can help to bring awareness to a generation that missed it.”
