21/10/2004 - 08:58:19
The East-Link Toll Bridge in Dublin today celebrates its 20th anniversary.

The bridge was opened on Sunday, October 21, 1984 by then Taoiseach Garret FitzGerald. The East-Link is a partnership between National Toll Roads (NTR), Dublin Port and Dublin City Council.

Commenting on the anniversary, Tom J Roche, son of the founder, and current chairman of NTR said: “Since it opened in 1984 a lot of water, quite literally, has gone under the bridge and some 120 million customers have used the toll facility.”

The Minister for Transport Martin Cullen said: the East-Link project proved investing in infrastructure benefits the daily lives of thousands of people.

He added: “In just two decades, the East-Link Bridge has made a major contribution to the revitalisation of the east side of the city and the whole Dublin Port area."

Between July and September 2004, traffic increased by 10%, with daily traffic in excess of 100,000 on busy Fridays.
