O'Neill still harbours European dream

20/10/2004 - 08:53:59
Celtic manager Martin O’Neill believes victory in the Ukraine tonight would put his side back on course for a place in the Champions League knock-out stages.

The Scottish champions and Shakhtar Donetsk currently lie at the bottom of Group F after defeats to Barcelona and AC Milan.

But now the Catalan and Italian giants collide in a double-header and O’Neill sees that as a chance to get back in contention – if Celtic can deliver the points in eastern Europe this evening.

“We’re in the Champions League and we want to win this game to keep our chances alive,” he said.

“Assuming we can win, I am hoping Barcelona can win in Milan, and if that is the case then we have to think that our best chance will be beating Milan at home.”

But O’Neill is sweating on the fitness of Bobo Balde after revealing that both Joos Valgaeren and Ulrik Laursen were major injury doubts.

The Guinea international missed the weekend win over Hearts at Parkhead with a knee injury, but he trained with his team-mates at the Central Stadium last night.
