Benitez understands Cissé frustration

20/10/2004 - 08:09:31
Rafael Benitez dismissed Djibril Cissé’s obviously angry reaction to being substituted against Deportivo La Coruna as something he would have expected from a player upset with a result.

The France striker was clearly furious when he was taken off with 25 minutes to go after a fruitless night trying to break down Deportivo’s massed defence in Liverpool’s goalless Champions League draw at Anfield.

Cissé was replaced by Irish midfielder Steve Finnan and the forward hurled his water bottle into the dug-out as he came off.

But Benitez claimed he was not bothered by the reaction, saying: “He was bound to feel upset. You are bound to feel like that if you are not winning.

“Obviously he cannot be happy, but I was happy with him and the effort he put in. It was just bad luck that he didn’t score.”

The Spaniard added: “I believe Cissé and Milan Baros can play well together, and they did so for 70 minutes before we decided to change things and try something different. All they lacked was goals.”
