Chewing gum companies could face compulsory charge
20/10/2004 - 10:30:27The makers of chewing gum are considering the latest Government plans for keeping Irish streets clean.
The new Minister for the Environment, Dick Roche, has proposed implementing a compulsory charge on chewing gum companies, rather than a levy on each pack.
His predecessor, Martin Cullen, wanted a tax of up to 15c per pack.
The Government is engaged in a consultation process on ways to clean up chewing gum litter, which costs millions each year.
