216 patients waiting on trolleys at Irish hospitals this morning

20/10/2004 - 13:17:45
The overcrowding crisis at accident and emergency departments is ongoing today, with around 200 patients awaiting admission to hospitals throughout the country.

The Irish Nurses Organisation said a total of 216 patients were waiting on trolleys in casualty units this morning, 136 of them in the eastern region.

The organisation said the A&E unit at Cavan General Hospital was so overcrowded that patients were being cared for in the x-ray department, the out-patients department and in corridors.

It said one of these patients had been on a trolley for five days and is likely to be discharged today having never seen a hospital bed.
