Ferguson offers Rooney helping hand

18/10/2004 - 14:33:24
Alex Ferguson is confident he can keep Wayne Rooney’s feet firmly on the ground despite his sensational Champions League debut.

England striker Rooney marked his United debut with a dazzling hat-trick against Fenerbahce at Old Trafford.

Now United’s £27m (€38.9m) signing from Everton faces the prospect of a first away date in the competition against Sparta Prague tomorrow night.

Ferguson knows his 18-year-old star is firmly under the spotlight whenever he plays but believes he is at the right club to cope with the adulation.

“We are being careful about his over exposure, which can happen with a player of talent, but we’ve faced it before, with Ryan Giggs and others, and so we have experience of handling it.

“We have a group of experience pros in the dressing room and Wayne knows where I am all the time. He knows he can get advice from me whenever he needs it so I don’t think it is a problem for us.”

Ferguson was asked if United were able to concentrate properly on the Sparta Prague clash with Sunday’s vital Premiership showdown with champions Arsenal looming large.

“There is a big focus on next Sunday’s game with Arsenal because it’s such a vital game in the English football calendar but that is not to forget we have an important game with Sparta Prague first,” Ferguson told Sky Sports News.
