Study highlights widespread deprivation in Tallaght West
A new study has highlighted widespread poverty, deprivation and social exclusion in the Tallaght West area of Dublin.
Reports this morning said the study, based on census data and interviews with parents, found that 90% of children in the locality lived in fear of anti-social behaviour or crime.
The survey also found that one-quarter of local children lived in houses without adequate heating, while half lived in families dependent on state benefits.
Some 10% of residents over the age of 15 were also found to be unemployed, while 27% had no formal educational qualifications and 34% had finished school at Junior Cert level.
The study recommends a range of measures to tackle the problem, including improvements in housing and the local environment, the provision of extra-curricular opportunities for children and the provision of more pre-school places and adult education and training programmes.
