Owen raises England hopes

05/10/2004 - 18:23:35
Michael Owen believes he has “a very good chance” of playing for England in Saturday’s World Cup qualifying match against Wales.

The striker felt pain in his lower back just seven minutes into his second start for Real Madrid in last Sunday’s defeat by Deportivo La Coruna.

But a scan today showed nothing untoward and the former Liverpool player expects to figure in Saturday’s group six clash at Old Trafford.

He told a press conference televised on Sky Sports News: “I felt a bit of a problem in the game on Sunday and I’ve been for a scan today.

“Everything showed up all clear which I expected it to, because I’ve done these things before.

“I’m still feeling it a little bit but it’s going by the day so as soon as I can train I will.

“If I’m not 100% I won’t play but if I can gradually build up my fitness I’ll be available.”

The 24-year-old added: “The physios and doctors are all positive and think I’ve got a very good chance.

“I had the same problem a couple of weeks ago and after two or three days of rest and treatment I was back and feeling great again.”
