Lisbon date for Newcastle
Newcastle have been pitted against Portuguese giants Sporting Lisbon in the inaugural UEFA Cup group stage.
It could mean a reunion with midfielder Hugo Viana, who has returned to the Portuguese capital on loan after his £8.5m (€12.3m) move from Sporting failed to pay off for Newcastle or the player.
They will also face French side Sochaux, Greek club Panionios and Dinamo Tbilisi of Georgia in Group D. Sporting will have every incentive to progress, with the final to be played at their own Jose Alvalade Stadium on May 18 next year.
The Magpies made comfortable progress against Israeli side Hapoel Bnei Sakhnin in the last round, winning 5-1 in Tel Aviv for a 7-2 aggregate win.
They reached the semi-finals last season before being eliminated by a Marseille side inspired by Chelsea summer recruit Didier Drogba.
United will play two matches at home and two away, with one match day off. The ties will be played on October 21, November 4, November 25, December 1/2 and December 15/16.
Meanwhile, Rangers were drawn to face Auxerre, Grazer AK, Amica Wronki and AZ Alkmaar while Hearts were drawn against Feyenoord, Schalke, Basle and Ferencvaros.
