Elan slump decreases ISEQ's rise
This morning's good start by Dublin's ISEQ was almost cancelled out by a slump in Elan's shares today.
The pharmaceutical giant saw their share price tumble 92c to €18.38, almost undoing the good work of the financial sector today.
The ISEQ was up by 9.98 points to 5707.48 by the end of trading today.
AIB led the financials' showing, up 223c to €13.89. Bank of Ireland was up 15c to €11.17, Anglo Irish Bank moved up 10c to €15.25 while Irish Life and Permanent brought up the rear with a 6c rise to €13.37.
A surge of 50c to €18.00 in Insurance group FBD Holdings' shares also helped the index's positive performance as did the 20c rise in bookmaker Paddy Power's share price (to €9.75) and food company Kerry Group's stock (to €18.00).
Building materials group, CRH, saw their stock price go up by 11c to €19.60 while Independent News and Media showed a 7c rise to €2.17.
Budget airline, Ryanair, had a 11c fall to €3.98 depite releasing figures today showing its passenger numbers for September have risen 17% year on year to 2.37 million.
The load factor for the budget airling, ie the proportion of seats sold, for the month was 87%, a rise of 2% on September 2003.
