Hatton challenger promises a war
American Mike Stewart has promised Ricky Hatton a war to remember in their WBU light-welterweight title clash in Manchester.
The 26-year-old claims champion Hatton is made for him to pull off an upset on Friday night to rival recent defeats for Mike Tyson and Roy Jones.
Stewart said: “There’s only one way I know how to fight, and that’s to come forward. I’ve had 40 professional fights like that and I can’t change my style now. I’m planning for my best ever performance and I am going to fight until my heart quits.”
Hatton had a close-up view of Stewart losing to IBF champion Sharmba Mitchell in the same arena in April.
The gutsy challenger was floored three times by the awkward Mitchell – who could await the winner of Friday’s contest if he wins his unification scrap with Kostya Tszyu.
Hatton will not take the American for granted despite his patchy display and his non-puncher’s record of just 20 early wins in his 40 fights.
