Gardaí investigating vote-rigging claims in Tipperary

28/09/2004 - 07:20:42
Gardaí are reportedly investigating allegations of vote-rigging in Co Tipperary during June's local elections.

Reports this morning said the investigation was launched following complaints received by the Mayor of Thurles.

The complaints relate to alleged personation, whereby one person assumes the identity of another in order to cast their vote.

This morning's reports said up to 300 suspect votes were being examined.

Some of those votes were allegedly registered to dead people or people who were known to be out of the area on polling day, while some legitimate voters were also allegedly turned away because somebody else had already cast their vote.
