Cowen to hold further talks with North parties today

Foreign Affairs Minister Brian Cowen and Northern Secretary Paul Murphy are due to hold further talks with the North’s political parties at Stormont today as part of efforts to revive the peace process.

The talks are designed to lay the foundations for the make-or-break negotiations due to get underway at Leeds Castle in Britain next week.

All sides have expressed reluctant optimism ahead of the negotiations, but the prospects for a deal remain unclear.

The Democratic Unionist Party is demanding complete IRA decommissioning and an end to paramilitary activity, while Sinn Féin wants unionists to commit themselves to sharing power with republicans.
