Bypass will end traffic chaos, vows Brennan

09/09/2004 - 14:39:34
A €12m bypass will end hours of daily traffic chaos for more than 6,000 motorists in Cavan town, it was claimed today.

Seamus Brennan, Transport Minister, said the new N3-N55 bypass would cut journey times and also improve safety.

The minister said it was another step in fulfilling a five year, €9bn plan, to create a high quality roads network for the State.

“On average €150m will be spent each month for the next five years on building the motorway infrastructure that is vital to the future economic growth of this country,” the minister said.

“This is primarily taxpayers’ money that is being invested so there is a clear responsibility on all involved to ensure it is managed properly and value for the money is delivered.”

The route is the second phase of a €32m bypass around Cavan. The first section opened to traffic in September 1999 at a cost of €20m.

When completed the 12.3km stretch of road will carry thousands of cars and lorries in a bid to cut journey times across the Borders, Midlands and Western region.

The 3km single carriageway road runs from the Dublin Road roundabout on the N3 at Pollamore to the N55 at Corlorgan, south of Cavan is due to be completed by early 2006.

“This new road is a vital link in the Cavan bypass and the urgent need for it has increased significantly since Phase 1 was opened five years ago,” Mr Brennan added.

Since 2000, a total of 41 schemes, delivering 277km of new roads, have been completed across Ireland.
