Israel fires missiles in Gaza Strip

04/08/2004 - 07:27:03
An Israeli helicopter fired a missile in the northern Gaza Strip early today at an unknown target near the town of Beit Hanoun, Palestinian witnesses and rescue services said.

It was not immediately clear if any Palestinians were injured in the missile strike but ambulances were searching in the area, the rescue officials said.

In the past four years of fighting, Israel has frequently shot missiles at Palestinians suspected of militant activity or those involved in planting explosives.

Israel expanded early yesterday an operation in the western area of Beit Hanoun, moving five tanks and three bulldozers into the area, military officials said.

The army took over the area in early July to prevent Palestinian militants from firing rockets on nearby Israeli areas.

Two Israelis, including a four-year-old boy, have been killed in the Israeli town of Sderot from rocket fire in recent weeks.
